Description

The Statue of Charles III of Bourbon is a 19th-century monument in Piazza Cavallotti, on Via Primo Settembre, in front of the Chamber of Commerce building in Messina. It commemorates the king who in 1735 spent about two months in the city before being crowned King of Sicily in Palermo.

The sovereign stands upright, wearing finely decorated armour and a wide cloak. Below, the cylindrical pedestal, with no inscription, is adorned with neoclassical festoons.

The statue was made in Rome by Saro Zagari from Messina, a pupil of Pietro Tenerani, and put in place at the beginning of 1860. A few months later Garibaldi's men entered the city and pulled down the statues of Kings Francis I and Ferdinand I.

This one and that of Ferdinand II were saved because General Medici had them taken to safety in a museum. Charles III returned to his original base only in 1973.
