Description
The Passeggiata a Mare is the pedestrian seafront in the centre of Messina, along the port between Viale Boccetta and Viale Giostra. It is the place for a stroll with views over the Strait, the port and the votive column of the Madonna della Lettera.
Along the way you come across the Masotto Battery monument, a bronze group by Salvatore Buemi with three soldiers in heroic poses. It commemorates a mountain artillery unit, made up largely of men from Messina and its province, that fell at the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
More modern is the Bios Fountain by Ranieri Wanderlingh, unveiled in 2005: shapes that recall living nature and a subtitle, “life that always begins again”. The artist wanted it on the seafront, on the border between the city and the sea.
One stretch of the promenade occupies the site of the trade fair, which closed in 2012 after more than seven centuries.
