Description
The Palazzo delle Poste is the elegant Art Nouveau building on Piazza Antonello, in the center of Messina: it was the first to rise on the square in the city rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, and since 2003 it has been the University's administrative headquarters.
Like the other three buildings on the square, it has a wide portico on the ground floor, tall rusticated limestone bases and balustraded mullioned windows on the second floor. Take your time with the reliefs of the loggia: angel mail carriers and telegraphists, an Art Nouveau tribute to communications.
Inside, a frieze takes up the theme among flowers and symbols of the city, including a modern ferryboat. The large arcaded courtyard is modeled on the 16th-century cloister of the nearby convent of San Domenico, lost in the earthquake. It was designed by Vittorio Mariani, from Siena.
