Description
The Palazzo della Camera di Commercio is the large Renaissance-style building on Piazza Cavallotti, in Messina, behind the Customs House. It was one of the building sites of the city reborn after the 1908 earthquake: begun in 1912, it was finished in 1926.
The façade is rusticated, with a white marble staircase and three arched entrances closed by wrought-iron gates. In the entrance hall are marble stairs and six bronze reliefs by Antonio Bonfiglio depicting illustrious people of Messina; at the heart of the building is the Neoclassical Salone della Borsa, which hosts exhibitions and events.
It was designed by Camillo Puglisi Allegra when he was only twenty-seven. In 1943 Anglo-American bombs damaged it: during the restoration a story was added.
