Description

The University of Messina was established in 1548 by Pope Paul III. It is one of the most ancient of Italy and it has always had an important role in the city economy and culture.

Its history began before the official date: in the 13th century there was a known school of jurisprudence and  in the 15th century an important school of Greek was founded. Only in 1548 it was formally established. Immediately, arguments between the University of Messina and the University of Catania arose. For this reason, the university activities started in 1956.

The University, as well as the city of Messina, had moments of cultural magnificence and less flowering ones. It was closed in 1678 after the terrible anti-Spanish revolt and until 1838 it was possible to study only at the Carolingian academy. It was refounded in 1838 by Frederick II of Bourbon and closed again in 1847 during the Sicilian revolution of 1848 against Bourbons. In 1862 it was declassed to a second class university and, only after an agreement between Municipality, Province and Chamber of Commerce and Arts was qualified as a first class University.

Today, the University of Messina is made by eleven departments, some of them are considered the most prestigious of Italy, such as the Law, Veterinary and Engineering faculties. More than 25.000 students from Calabria and Sicily choose this University every year.
