INAIL Palace

Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, 122. (Open Map)

Description

The Palazzo dell'INAIL is a five-story building from 1938 on Via Garibaldi, in the center of Messina: a spare example of 1930s Italian architecture, a compact, squared-off block clad in pale stone, to see as you walk by.

Look at the travertine and Carrara marble façade, almost flat, marked by a row of vertical pillars capped at the top by a long horizontal beam. No ornament: everything rests on the geometry of the block and the quality of the stone.

It was designed by Giuseppe Samonà and Guido Viola, in the Messina being rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake. It is the Messina office of the national institute for insurance against accidents at work: an office, to admire from outside.
