Description
Seat of the former Provincial Administration of Messina, it is located in Piazza Antonello. It is one of the most interesting public buildings from an architectonical point of view, after the earthquake of 1908.
The construction, designed by the head engineer of the technical provincial office, Alessandro Giunta, was inaugurated in 1918. It was previously occupied by the Professed House of Jesuits.
The building is in eclectic neo-classical style with some signs of Renaissance in the windows. The outside wainscots and steps are covered by Trapani stone, and the gates are made of wrought iron.
In the interior, there is valuable Salone degli Specchi and the big Sala Consiliare. At the back of the building, there is the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, dedicated to the art critic Lucio Barbera. It hosts around fifty works of art made by Italian artists belonging to the 20th century, and a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Nobel prize winner Salvatore Quasimodo.
