Description
Palazzo Cerruti - Bisazza is an eclectic Art Nouveau building in the historic center of Messina, on Via Lepanto at the corner of Via Cesare Battisti and Via I Settembre, and it forms the backdrop to the square of the Church of the Catalans.
You can spot it at a glance by the Star of David worked into the balcony railings, an unmistakable detail. From the same square you can also see the old Church of the Catalans and the statue of John of Austria.
It was designed by the Florentine Gino Coppedè, who came to Messina for the rebuilding after the 1908 earthquake, even before Ernesto Basile from Palermo. In the city he worked mostly along Corso Garibaldi, then the main thoroughfare, and also designed Palazzo Tremi, known as the Palazzo del Gallo, and the Palazzetto Coppedè.
For anyone hunting for his buildings there is a little game of recognition: at the Palazzetto Coppedè, on Via Cardines, the balcony railings have an eagle; here, the star.
