Description
Messina's War Memorial (Monumento ai Caduti) is the large bronze and marble group in Piazza Unione Europea, in the center of the city: the memorial to the Messina soldiers who died in World War I and in the war that followed.
On a marble base stand three bronze figures, a bareheaded infantryman, a sailor and an airman: the three forces of land, sea and sky. On the stele stand out two eagles; on the sides of the base two winged Victories lead infantrymen and horsemen into battle.
It was designed by the sculptor Giovanni Nicolini and built in 1936. The marble plaque for the fallen of World War II was added in 1950.
