Description

Next to the Municipality, there is the Fontana Senatoria. The fountain consists of a circular basin located above three cement steps were stands the original part of the monument: a stele on which a marble cup raises with a pinecone in the middle. The fountain still contains the undamaged plaque in relief remembering the names of the senators who commissioned the fountain in 1619: Don Franciscus Marullo, Bernardus Moleti, Thomas Zuccarato, Marcellus Cirino, Vincentius De Celis and Franciscus De Judice. At first it was probably placed in Piazza Palazzo Reale (nowadays the Old Customs House) and, together with others fountains, it was part of a plan designed by Giacomo Maffei for the decoration of the maritime theatre along the pier. In 1937 it was placed next to the Municipality on the occasion of the visit of Benito Mussolini.
