Description
Built during the 18th century by local artisans, it is said that it was originally placed in the inner yard of the ancient archiepiscopal seminary. After the earthquake of 1908, the fountain, till 1988, was placed at the middle of Viale Boccetta and then moved to Largo Seguenza because of the increase in traffic.
The work, made of white marble, rests on a two-steps mixtilinear base that follows the shape of the basin. At the middle of the basin, a pedestal raises—on a polygonal plinth—consisting of four fluted volutes with an ornamental cup on the top. The decoration is repeated in another pedestal that raises from the ornamental cup to support another smaller cup, decorated by four shells and four masks from which the water gushes out. The work ends with a pinecone–shaped decoration, put on a dado enriched by a double frame and four little water-carrying masks.
