Description
This Savoca, Castelmola and Taormina tour from Messina packs three of eastern Sicily's best-known stops into about six hours, a short drive from the harbour. The first stop is Savoca, among the most beautiful villages in Italy and a location of the film The Godfather. You get around two hours here for the catacombs, the Mother Church and the old Bar Vitelli, famous from the film.
Then the road climbs to Castelmola, perched above Taormina like a crown, with a balcony over the Ionian Sea and a terrace facing Mount Etna. From there the route follows the Ionian coast down to Taormina, where you have two hours for the old town, the Greco-Roman theatre, the designer shops and a taste of typical Sicilian products.
On the way back you pause for 15 minutes to look at Isola Bella from the panoramic point at Taormina Mare and take some photos. When you are dropped off in Messina, a short drive around the city rounds off the day, with a look at the Strait of Messina.
